MTN Ghana set for Silver Jubilee launch Wednesday

Business leaders and other dignitaries are expected to attend MTN Ghana’s 25th-anniversary celebration on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions and safety protocols, in-person attendance will be limited, but customers and stakeholders can watch the live event on MTN Ghana’s Facebook page (mtn.com.gh) and YouTube channel.

At 11 a.m., the launch will also be broadcast live on TV3 and UTV.

Scancom Ltd (MTN Ghana) was established as a private limited liability company in 1994. It started operations in Ghana in 1996, initially covering Accra and Tema.

Since then, the company’s services have been extended to all sixteen regions, key districts, towns, and many rural areas. MTN currently has the country’s most extensive network coverage. Following its initial public offering, the company’s regulations were amended to make it a public company, which is now known as Scancom PLC.

The company, which began with 20 employees, now employs thousands of people and serves millions of customers. Over the years, the brand has evolved from Spacefon to Spacefon-Areeba, Areeba, and MTN.

The company has led several technological and digital innovations in the telecoms sector and has made significant contributions to Ghana’s development through various projects and initiatives.

MTN is currently the number one telecommunications network in Ghana, having won numerous awards.

At the end of December 2020, held more than 57 percent of the total market and more than 72 percent of the data market. It also controls a sizable portion of the mobile money market.

It is currently the only telco in the country designated as a significant market power (SMP).
