Eidos Montreal is making a Guardians of the Galaxy game

EIDOS MONTREAL: The creators of the Deus Ex games are now taking on one of Marvel’s most well-known superhero ensembles. Square Enix announced at their E3 2021 keynote that Eidos Montreal, the company behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution, is working on a game simply titled Guardians of the Galaxy.

In a third-person action-adventure game, players take on the role of Star Lord (aka Peter Quill). In a new twist, Peter will always be accompanied by the rest of the Guardians, with AI companions such as Groot and Rocket. The story takes set some years after a cosmic conflict, when the Guardians are still a new group, having just been together for a year.

Eidos also claims that player choice will be important: as the de facto head of the team, you’ll have to make decisions that affect the tale. You’ll have to pick whether to sell Rocket or Groot to a monster collector during one sequence, for example. (Intriguingly, the Guardians were previously featured in a Telltale choice-based adventure game in 2017.)

Early gameplay footage reveals a game with massive shooter fights, vibrant environments, tons of ‘80s music, strange alien beasts, stylish starships, and plenty of dialogue.

Square Enix has already released an Avengers game mostly produced by Crystal Dynamics, so this isn’t their first step into the Marvel universe (Eidos Montreal also assisted on that game). Despite a positive response to the single-player campaign, the game was marred by live-service aspects and microtransactions, which were widely panned. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy will be a single-player game with no DLC or microtransactions.

Marvel games haven’t always had the best track record, but that is gradually changing. Most notably, Sony’s Insomniac developed a fantastic Spider-Man game, which was followed by an equally fantastic spinoff featuring Miles Morales.

On October 26th, Guardians of the Galaxy will be released for the PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
