How to hide Google Meet in Gmail’s desktop app

In April, Google released Google Meet, a revised version of its video chatting software Hangouts Meet, and made it open to everyone with a Google account. Using the tools Google has placed on the left-hand side of the screen, you may initiate or join a Meet videoconference straight from your Gmail inbox.

But what if you don’t want Meet to be there all the time, or if you don’t want it to be there at all? You can conceal the buttons if you want to. (Note: depending on your administrator’s settings, you may not be able to update this if you’re on a corporate Google Workspace account.)

Here’s how to make Google Meet invisible in the Gmail desktop app. (You can also disable it in your Android or iOS app.)

  • Open Gmail.
  • Click on the cog icon in the top-right corner and on “See all settings.”
  • Click on the “Chat and Meet” tab.
  • Next to the “Meet:” label, select “Hide the Meet section in the main menu.”
  • Click “Save changes.”

That’s it! And even if you hide the Meet shortcut in Gmail, you can always access Meet by going to https://meet.google.com/.
